If you're like me (God help you, if you are), you probably unzip an
archive you've leeched and go through the directory and delete every
file named "Read.Me", "ReadMe.1st", "History.txt", "File_id.diz" and
especially those nasty "Register.txt" files.
I made a vow when I started programming that I wouldn't clutter up the
archives I release with that kind of nonsense. So, hopefully, you were
curious enough to read this "DeleteMe.1st" file <G>

This program took a lot of work to produce (Almost three months of
trial'n'error programming resulting in nearly 4000 lines of C/C++ code).
And, unfortunately, nothing in life is free. But this nifty little
Automated Episode Guide almost is! That's right -- you can clear your
conscience and assure that there'll be future updates to this program
(as well as other neato-frito programs from Snake-Byte Inc.) for the
almost-FREE sum of $5.00. How can we afford to let this rare jewel of
a program go for the piddly little amount of $5.00?!?!
Because, here at Snake-Byte Inc., we deal in VOLUME! VOLUME!! VOLUME!!!
We'll eat a bug to make a sale! Come on down to our Midnight Madness
sale and...Wait a minute. Wrong sales pitch. Sorry. Anyway, you get the
picture. <Insert normal shareware begging/pleading/demanding here>.
What do you get for your $5.00? That warm-tummy feeling of satisfaction
knowing you did the RIGHT thing. This program is in no way "Crippled". I
detest "CrippleWare" and decided early on that I wouldn't do that kind
of thing. So, there's no "registered version". What you have now is the
fully-functional program. It contains one little shareware notice option
on the main menu (that you don't even have to look at if you don't want
to) and it shows that "nag" screen ONLY when you exit the program, so
it doesn't inconvenience you before or during the program's execution.
(And if that gets your shorts in a bunch, send me a 3.5 disk plus return
postage and I'll compile you a special version sans nags!).

Version 0.1 - Beta versions. Fine-tuned the mechanics of the program.
through Ran face-first into the DOS's archaic memory limitations.
Version 0.888 Cringed. Cursed. Cried. Tried to fix the program wasting
vast amounts of time & effort along the way. Yikes.
Version 0.999 New Beta version. Totally scrapped all of the above
Rewrote the program from the ground up using a different
compiler (Watcom's 32 bit DOS4GW). Almost 4000 lines of C
code later, it's done!
The changes: 32 Bit extended DOS program vs. the old 16 bit
DOS program. Completely revamped the display
routines in order to give it a uniform "look"
similar to the 32 Bit OS/2 A.E.G. released
in July. Tightened a few of the routines.
Version 1.0 - First release version of the program. General, all-purpose
menu-driven 32 bit Extended DOS4GW Automated Episode Guide
Also, there may be an "Easter egg" or two in the program.
See if you can find any! Email me if you find any, or if
you give up & want a hint or two.

DOS sessions under OS/2 oddities:
If you CTRL/C while running the DOS A.E.G. under OS/2 Warp in either a
DOS full screen or windowed DOS VDM session, you get a Sys 3175 error
(under "real" DOS, the program breaks back to the command line). Two
"kludgy" work-arounds: (1) Don't CTRL/C! <G> (2) If you simply MUST hit
CTRL/C, let OS/2 kill that DOS session and then you can restart the A.E.G.
To run the DOS A.E.G. from a program template object under OS/2 you must
follow these steps:
(1) Drag/drop a program template to the desired location on your OS/2
desktop. The settings folder will pop up.
(2) In the "Path and filename" field, specify the DOS4GW.EXE file's path
(this executable should be in the archive along with the A.E.G. program)
(3) In the "Optional / Parameters" field, specify the path of the A.E.G.
program executable. Close settings. The Program should now work.
You can't run the DOS A.E.G. from the drives object under OS/2. This is
because the executable must use the DOS4GW.EXE "stub program" to load/run.
In a "real" DOS VDM under OS/2 (ie: not using 4DOS replacement command.com),
you lose your cursor upon exiting the program.
But, why the heck are you using the DOS version under OS/2? Don't you know
about the 32 bit OS/2 version of the A.E.G.?!? If not, look around on the
site you grabbed this version from.
"REAL" DOS:
Some beta testers have reported that they couldn't run the DOS A.E.G. in
*ANY* flavor of DOS (under OS/2 or from "real" DOS). This was caused by my
own stupidity. The reason is: you *MUST* have the DOS4GW.EXE "stub program"
somewhere in the DOS path. Watcom C/C++ conveniently copies one to your DOS
directory (I didn't know this <blush>). I have remedied this situation by
including the needed file in the A.E.G.'s archive. Put it in your path or
in the same directory as the A.E.G.'s executable.
If you don't have ANSI enabled under DOS, the episode information is
displayed on the screen in white text, instead of the "light green" text
that I programmed. This has absolutely no ill effect (unless you're color
blind to white or green. Fix for the former, load ANSI.SYS. Fix for the
latter, unload ANSI.SYS <G>)

If you encounter any problems with this program (either bugs in the
actual mechanics of the program, or misspellings and/or incorrect info
in the various episode data fields) please drop me a line at one of
e-mail addresses in the last section of this document. I will try and
implement the fix in the next version of the program that I release.

I will update this program whenever new episdes/seasons are completed. I
will also correct any misspellings and other errata. If you spot something
that is wrong, email me and I'll include the correction in the next version.
I'll probably add some printing routines so you can print out a brief
episode list, eps by season, a particular episode by itself or a full
blown, everthing-included EpGuide.
I want to add some global search routines, eventually.
I'd really like to add some multi-media stuff to the program, like
sound clips or maybe some pictures but I'll have to hone my chops as
a programmer, first <G>
An OS/2 version which is basically the same program as this DOS version
is also available. Look for ???OS2##.ZIP where you grabbed this DOS version
(??? is the three letter code for the given TV show and the ## is the two
digit version number code).
If I *ever* learn how to program for the OS/2 Presentation Manager, I
may release a PM version of the Automated EpGuide.
A Windows 3.1 version "may" be in the works. This all depends on whether
I'm able to grasp the oddities of programming for Windows.
A WinNT version? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Good one! Get real!
A When95 version? Very doubtful. I'm not a Micro$oft lemming, so my computer
wouldn't touch Win95 with a ten foot parallel cable.
A MAC version? Even more doubtful, since I don't own a Mac & don't know
anyone who does.
A Unix version? Doubtful. I know *I* won't be doing one. I may make some
arrangements with a fellow MSTie who's currently a *nix user. Don't hold
your breath, though.
A Pet, Vic20 C64, C128, Amiga, Timex Sinclair, TI or CoCo version? Jeeeez!
It's the 90s, people!!! Isn't it about time you upgraded your computer?
Other A.E.G.'s? Yes, TV Buffs and Couch Potatoes! I plan on releasing a
series of A.E.G.'s for various TV shows based on this A.E.G. "engine".
